Do you remember these? Connect the dots puzzles were a fun part of elementary school. Some were too easy – you could tell right away what the picture would reveal. Others were a little more challenging – they required some diligence to unveil the hidden image. My algebra teacher even created one in which every number was an equation that had to solved in order figure out the numbers to connect.
That’s a little bit what listening for the Still, Small Voice can be like. In my experience G-d does not speak in complete sentences. His messages come as a word here, a word there – disjointed, often seemingly unrelated.
Imagine doing a connect the dots puzzle, but instead of following the numbers in order – 1,2,3,4,5…you connected the pairs randomly…3&4, 9&10, 1&2, 20 &21…. The picture would eventually emerge, but getting to the “ah ha” moment would require faith in and commitment to the process.
A couple of images caught my attention yesterday…
Here is graffiti scrawled on a concrete post at a trailhead for a mountain hike. I saw this after waking in the middle of the night due to jetlag and not being to get back to sleep.
Then last evening I saw this passage from John’s Gospel written in wet concrete on the floor of my favorite LA taco place…
As my journey unfolds I am striving to be attentive to seeing and hearing these words from G-d. I hope that I can collect them and string them together in proper order to receive whatever message G-d may have for me.
